Vice President Kamala Harris
Ceremonially Swears in Julissa Reynoso Pantaleon

Vice President Kamala Harris of the United States of America
Reported by Karen Ann Carr

At 5:30 PM EST, Vice President Harris will ceremonially swear in Julissa Reynoso Pantaleon to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Kingdom of Spain, and to serve concurrently and without additional compensation as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Principality of Andorra. Reynoso Pantaleon had been first lady Jill Biden's chief of staff, prior to her Senate confirmation, and co-chair of the Gender of Policy Council at the White House. She is also a former U.S. ambassador to Uruguay.

At 5:53 pm, first lady Jill Biden, who had not been a publicly announced attendee, entered the Vice President's Ceremonial Office for the swearing-in ceremony of Reynoso Pantaleón.

Vice President Harris followed First Lady Dr. Jill Biden in. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden stood off to one side.

Vice President Harris had to double back though and said as she did, "It might be helpful if I have the card that I'm going to swear her in on." Julissa Reynoso Pantaleón and her family entered the room next.

At the top of the ceremony Vice President Harris acknowledged the First Lady, prompting a round of applause from attendees of the ceremony.

Vice President Harris proceded to deliver the oath to Julissa Reynoso Pantaleon. At the end she told the new ambassador "congratulations" and shook her hand.

Vice President Harris then hugged Julissa Reynoso Pantaleon's mother, who held the Bible that her daughter was sworn in on. She had been standing next to Vice President Harris.

"Thank you, everybody," Julissa Reynoso Pantaleón said, as attendees applauded.

Vice President Harris suggested they take a group picture and they all did, including First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

Neither Vice President Harris nor the First Lady answered questions. Vice President Harris left the room as did Dr. Biden moments after her.

The event concluded at 5:56 pm.
