ROME, ITALY — President Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. of the United States of America entered a reception room at Quirinale Palace, decorated with two beautiful chandeliers and with paintings and tapestries on the walls, at 3:10 p.m. He approached Italian President Sergio Mattarella, both men put their hands over their heart, then shook hands.
President Biden gestured Mattarella toward the U.S. delegation, saying: “This way. This way!” The two men first greeted the U.S. side, which included Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and national security adviser Jake Sullivan, then walked over to the Italian delegation on the other side of the room and greeted its members.
President Biden and President Mattarella then stood in front of the flags of the U.S., Italy and the European Union, took off their masks and posed for a photo.
When asked about his meeting with Pope Francis, President Biden said “wonderful.” when asked about what their discussion was about, President Biden said “a lot" . .
President Biden left the room about 3:14 p.m.
